DIY Bonsai: Juniper & Jade

The art of bonsai is a beautiful and unique way to showcase a special tree. You’ve probably seen many bonsai trees before, but did you know that any tree or woody plant can technically be bonsai-ed? Bonsai is the style of planting and maintaining, not the plant itself.

As defined by the Merriman-Webster dictionary: bonsai is:

a potted plant (as a tree) dwarfed (as by pruning)
and trained to an artistic shape; also :  the art of
growing such a plant

Our bonsai enthusiast Brandon wanted to showcase the bonsai style from a few different angles. First he used a young juniper, already topped to bonsai from a local tree nursery, to create a more traditional style.  He also picked a jade plant from our succulent selection right here at 3rd Day Nursery to craft a more unusual, whimsical looking bonsai.

DIY Bonsai: Juniper & Jade

You will need:
– a tree or other woody plant of your choice
– pot, potting soil, and rocks for drainage
– clippers, pliers, wire mesh, and copper wire
– accent pieces (moss, rocks, wood, etc)

Step 1: Choose your tree and your pot. Featured in this project is a jade plant from 3rd Day Nursery and a young juniper tree.

Step 2: Wash down the roots of your plant. Then trim the roots back so your plant will fit into the pot.

Step 3: Place wire mesh over the drainage holes in your pot and secure the mesh with copper wire. Then, thread a longer wire through each of your new wire loops. Add a layer of rocks to your pot for drainage.

Step 4: Place the plant in the desired position and secure it in place by twisting wire around the plant’s rootball. Finally, add your soil.

Step 5: Trim down your tree and begin training it to take the shape you wish. When your are happy with your tree, add your accent pieces. The purpose of bonsai is to mimic nature in miniature. Create a scene around your bonsai by adding natural features such as moss, pebbles, driftwood, etc.

Step 6: You’re done! Now maintain your bonsai with periodic trimming, training, or by simply enjoying it. Brandon likes to change the scenery and accent pieces around his bonsai periodically to add a fresh new look. However you do it, you’re doing it right if you do it with love!

Falling into Fall at 3rd Day Nursery

With October and the autumn season finally in full swing, it’s the perfect time to reflect on all the hard work and improvements that have gone into 3rd Day Nursery recently – not only in the last month of September, but throughout the entire summer as well. We finished many projects and accomplished an enormous amount leading up to this fall, with much thanks to a great team of helping hands. 3rd Day Nursery wouldn’t be where it is today without all the help we have had from fellow plant lovers – you guys know who you are! A huge Mahalo to the entire 3rd Day Nursery crew, past and present. Here’s a recap of what we’ve been up to here in the recent months:

We finally finished revamping the orchid house, a project months in the making. We split and repotted all the orchids and completely reorganized the greenhouse. It looks like a brand new structure! Special thanks to Jazz, Natalia, Pam, and Mike for working on the various stages of this project.

In addition, our entire collection of Areca palms has been weeded, organized, and re-potted if necessary. A big shout out to Laura, Jesse, Sam, Jesus, Katie, Spencer, and Ben for all helping out so much with this hefty task. The palms are looking great!

3rd Day Nursery made big strides in plant expansion this summer as well. We put down massive amounts of new weed-mat, propagated more of our most popular succulents, and added new varieties that will be available to the public in future months. We also just received some exciting specimens from our friends at Logee’s Fruiting, Rare, and Tropical Plants. These new additions to 3rd Day Nursery include tropical and purple pitcher plants, a mini cylindrical snake-plant, blue jade vine, and the lifesaver cactus, just to name a few.

Last but not least, we’ve been dedicating quite a bit of time to our fruit and vegetable gardens. Since creating and planting the first rock-bed in April, we’ve put in nine total beds – almost half of them in the last month and a half! There has been so much fantastic help on the garden project – building the beds, planting, maintaining and mulching – but we definitely have to give a few extra props to our friend Jen, who has been working in there like a madwoman lately. This week we planted more tomatoes, lettuce, and papaya trees and had a bounty of fresh beans, radishes, carrots and herbs to feast on. We also just had the first dragonfruit ready to eat straight from the nursery. Yum!

As you can tell, we’re been quite busy here at 3rd Day Nursery. We feel great about everything we’ve accomplished in the past months and are excited to see what the rest of October and this fall will bring. Here’s to a bright and beautiful autumn of 2015!

DIY Backyard Beauty: Lava Rock Décor

Happy Succulent Sunday plant lovers! We recently completed this simple do-it-yourself project here at 3rd Day Nursery to inspire you to get creative with succulents. It was a lot of fun and really brightened up our landscape. You should try it out too! We hope you will enjoy this project as much as we did.

DIY Backyard Beauty: Lava Rock Décor

You will need:
– a large lava rock (or other porous rock)
– succulent cuttings of your choice
– potting soil

Step 1: Prepare your materials. Select and take your succulent cuttings and clean your rock. We sprayed our rock down with a hose.

Before the DIY project.

Step 2: Pack potting soil into the pores or “holes” in your rock. The soil will give each succulent cutting a medium to hold moisture and keep it steady until it begins to root.

Kitten helps pack soil.

Step 3: Spray the rock down again to moisten the soil and to make the holes more visible.

Step 4: Add your succulent cuttings. Experiment with succulents in different positions. Mix-and-match textures and colors to really make the décor pop.

Step 5: Sha-bam! And there you have it. Simple DIY Backyard Beauty using succulents for a Lava Rock Décor. This is a fun and easy way to spruce up porous rocks in your landscaping, especially when you live in Hawai’i and have plenty lava rock around. Now all that’s left to do is enjoy!

After the DIY project!

We hope you will try out this DIY project and let us know what you think. We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Note: Over the coming days and weeks, a few of your many cuttings may fall out and need to be replaced. Don’t worry; just add them back and eventually they will hold their positions as the new roots form.

We will check back in with monthly updates and photos so you can see how our lava rock is doing!
